Praying, fasting to herald in Islamic New Year

The 17th annual cultural programme to mark the commencement of the Islamic New Year 1434/ 2013 will be held on Saturday, November 24, at 18: 30h, at the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex, West Coast Demerara.
The programme, which is now a premiere activity on the calendar of events for Muslims in Guyana, is hosted by the Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman and the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex.
The lunar Islamic calendar began its calculation after the migration of Prophet Muhammad to Medina. The first month of the calendar is Muharram, in which the 10th day (called Ashura) is significant not only to Muslims, but humanity.
“It is reported that the entire universe was created on this day, the first drop of rain fell on this day, the first human, Prophet Adam was created on this day, Prophet Jesus ascended to the heavens on this day, Prophet Ayube (Jacob) regained his eyesight on this day, Prophet Moses saved the Children of Israel from Pharaoh’s army by the opening of the Red Sea on this day and our Prophet Muhammad’s grandsons, Imam Hussain and Hassan were martyred,” the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex said in a release.
The release noted that the 10th day of Muharram (Ashura) is very auspicious to Muslims and is observed with fasting, prayers and special programmes at the various mosques. The Islamic New Year commenced on November 15.
The organisations will be having 10 nights of programmes to observe the advent of the Islamic New Year / Month of Muharramm, starting on Thursday, November 15, at 18.00h, at the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex.
At these programmes, special topics dealing with the life of the Prophet will be discussed as well as the importance of showing love and gratitude for this greatest of all human beings.
Special videos will be shown on big screen, featuring Professor Dr Tahirul- Qadri, one of the world’s foremost Muslim scholars and founder of Minhaj University.
