The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is getting set to officially launch its campaign for the 2011 general elections, even as it continues with intensive bottom house rallies across the country. PPP presidential candidate Donald Ramotar said that the party is expected to launch its Kitty rally in less than one month.
“We are ready for the elections.
Our preparations are going very well at this point in time,” Ramotar said. The presidential candidate added that, so far, there have been over 400 bottom house rallies across the country. He, however, refuted claims that a component of those bottom house rallies was the race card.
“That goes against everything that the PPP believes. From the very inception of our party, we have started as a multi-racial party. We do not have… separate messages for separate communities in this country. We have one single message, and that is: trying to work for unity in our country,” said Ramotar.
Pointing to the party’s preparedness for the upcoming general elections, slated for later this year, Ramotar said that the PPP has reviewed the draft Code of Conduct prepared by the Guyana Elections Commission, and is ready to sign the document, even if it has to do so unilaterally.
As for the recent cases of multiple-registration found by the elections body, Ramotar says he does not see it affecting the final voters list. “It is very important that all of these things are being uncovered, and it is good that GECOM has the biometric mechanism that has helped in identifying duplicates.” Ramotar declared.
He added that it is time people pay the penalty for wrongdoing in these areas.
Reiterating that the PPP/C party is ready for elections, Ramotar said it is expected that the party’s manifesto would be released by the end of this month. However, the selection of the party’s prime ministerial candidate is still being worked out.
“We have a group of persons, but I wouldn’t want to comment on that now, until we come to a conclusion,” Ramotar said. The PPP/C general secretary demurred on details of a possible prime ministerial candidate, pointing out only that potential candidates are being considered from both the PPP and Civic components of the party.
