Brilliant Hetmyer leads NA/ Canje to title.
New Amsterdam/ Canje finally defeat ed a team from the Lower Corentyne area when on Sunday they won by 157 runs to lift the second annual Berbice Cricket Board ( BCB)/ Poonai’s Pharmacy Under- 13, Inter- zone title at the Port Mourant ground.Lower Corentyne had prevailed in the Under- 15, Under- 17, and Under- 19 Inter- zone tournaments, but this time around it was NA/ Canje’s chance to rejoice as the highly talented Shimron Hetmyer and off- spinner Leon Andrews carried them to victory.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, NA/ Canje amassed 170 all out from the allotted 60 overs with opener and captain Hetmyer scoring a polished 93, which included 15 fours and a six.
Hetmyer received support from Clinton Linden, who made 64 ( 8x4s), while Kadim Khan and Leon Andrews made 25 and 22 respectively.
Daniel Lewis was Lower Corentyne’s top bowler with 3- 57 from 17 overs, while leg- spinner Karran Singh bagged 3- 23 and J. Harrichand grabbed 2- 66.
In reply, Lower Corentyne lost wickets on a regular basis and were eventually dismissed for 113 from 55 overs.
Lewis topscored with a fight ing 35; Brandon Persaud scored 27, and Jamieson Anderson managed 15. Offspinner Andrews was the chief destroyer with 6- 25 from 20 impressive overs, while Hetmyer nabbed 2- 18.
Public Relations Officer of the BCB, Hilbert Foster, praised the teams for their discipline and commitment, while expressing pleasure at the cricketing talents available at the Under- 13 level in Berbice.
Foster pinpointed Shimron Hetmyer, Leon Andrews, Daniel Lewis, Brandon Prashad, Clinton Lindie, and Grisean Grant as players who would carry on the Ancient County’s tradition of producing outstanding youth cricketers.
President of the BCB, Keith Foster, expressed gratitude to Poonai’s Pharmacy for its sponsorship of the tournament, and also praised the number of parents who were on hand to witness the final.
Managing Director of Poonai’s Pharmacy, Poonai Bhiroog, said he continued to sponsor the tournament because he was sat isfied with the operation of the BCB. He added that he wanted to become part of the development of new talents in the county.
For his all- round effort, Hetmyer was named manof- the- match and received a collection of gifts. Both teams received $ 50,000 worth of school bags.
Meanwhile, the Junior Selection Committee has named a 22- man Elite Squad based on performances in the tournament. The squad will be involved in coaching sessions organised by the BCB and will also play a series of matches against Under- 13 teams from the other counties.
