Police launch probe into theft of OP flash drives

Police have launched an investigation into the theft of four flash drives from the Secretariat of the Permanent Secretary, Office of the President, on February 4th, 2011. The flash drives are valued at Gy$22,000, and they contain vital documents.

Police have said in a release that investigations have, thus far, revealed that on February 3, a female employee who was attached to that secretariat was informed by letter that she was transferred to another department and that she was no longer allowed to enter the secretariat.

However, at about 07:00h on the following day, she went to the Guard Room and uplifted the keys to the secretariat from the guard, who unwittingly gave it to her. A number of other employees and members of the Presidential Guard later observed her entering the secretariat, which she exited at about 07:45h. The worker has since not been seen.

Subsequent checks revealed that the four flash drives with the documents were missing, and that information had been deleted from the computers in the office. Some of the documents have been surfacing on a particular website, guyanaobservernews.org, and the police have been interviewing persons concerned with the production of the website.

On Monday, when the police contacted Mark Benschop, he denied ownership of that website and knowledge of articles posted on that website.

Further information in this matter will be provided at a later date, the police release said.
