Police investigating double murder in St Lucia

Police are investing two murders over the weekend even as the authorities said they had stepped up surveillance in hot spots across the island.
Police said that taxi driver Victor Mortley, may have been killed during a botched robbery attempt at his home at Maynard Hill on Saturday, while 47-year old Fabien Joseph, an employee of a local security firm was shot at his workplace at Choc.
A police report said that Joseph, who was off duty at the time of the incident, had entered the premises wearing a hooded sweat shirt and was shot by the security guard on duty.
Over the weekend, Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Crime, Francis Henry, said law enforcement authorities had stepped up surveillance at traditional hot spots.
“We have responded in a very positive way following these two weeks of incidents, it is very apparent that we have increased our boots on the ground.
“We have also sought to engage communities as to ways in which they can rally together and make their neighbourhoods safe. We have assumed the posture of being the catalyst to effect certain changes,” she said.
So far 29 people have been murdered on the island since the start of the year. Police report eight murders over the past two weeks.
