Police detain 2 in connection with drug bust at John Fernandes wharf

CocaineA customs broker attached to a well-known company, along with another person, was arrested following the discovery of 1276 pounds of marijuana in a container at the John Fernandes Limited wharf at Water Street, Georgetown on Tuesday.

Head of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), James Singh told Guyana Times International on Wednesday that officials from the unit were in close contact with their counterparts in Jamaica since it was suspected that the compressed marijuana might have been loaded onto the vessel when it docked in that country.

He, nevertheless, stated that investigations were ongoing while confirming that the two suspects remained in custody.

According to reports, agents from the Guyana Revenue Authority’s Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) and the Container Control Programme (CCP) were inspecting the container which was said to be carrying heavy-duty machinery when the marijuana was found in several packets.

This publication understands that the container arrived in Guyana on May 16, on board the MV Fouma from Jamaica but had originated in the United States.

In 2013, DEU officers had intercepted more than 4000 lbs of compressed marijuana inside a container at the John Fernandes Container Terminal.

It was reported that the marijuana was packed in several bags and was found among a shipment of cars which arrived in Guyana from Japan via China and Jamaica.
