Police Constable charged with dangerous, drunk driving

Nigel Griffith, the Police Constable who, while being heavily under the influence of alcohol, struck and severely injured a female motorist, was on Tuesday arraigned before Georgetown Magistrate Marissa Mittelholzer.

The 20-year-old, of Lot 58 Sarah Johanna, East Bank Demerara (EBD), denied the four charges read to him. The first charge alleged that on September 1, 2017 at the Ruimveldt Public Road, Georgetown, he drove motor vehicle PSS 4403 while his breath alcohol level was at .107, which is over the legal limit of alcohol consumption.
The three other charges allege that he drove a motor vehicle that was uninsured, unlicensed, and uncertified.
His attorney successfully petitioned for bail being granted, noting that the accused was cooperating fully with the investigation. The Prosecution had no objection to bail, but requested that the accused report to the Ruimveldt Police Station weekly.
As such, bail was granted in the sum of G$80,000, and he is scheduled to return to Court on October 10,
