Police athletes dominate at T&T Police Championships

Local law enforcement athletes Ronald Payne, Natasha Alder, Dennis Horatio and Winston George returned from the twin-island republic on Monday night, May16, having produced several gold medal performances at the Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) Police Athletics Championships last weekend.

The four athletes were all multiple event winners at the 2010 Guyana Police Force (GPF) Track and Field Championships which were held last August, and they continue to participate in national track and field competition.

Alder, a multi-disciplined athlete who is the reigning GPF female champion athlete, managed to win her specialty field event, the javelin. Alder is also a national basketball player, and she took her winning ways to the track, where she completed a sprint double in the 100m and 200m, and placed second in the 400m.

GPF and Inter-Services Athletics Championships (ISAC) champion athlete Ronald Payne, who has been the most dominant athlete in local field events for the past few years, also impressed last weekend in T&T. Payne won the men’s shot put and discus throws, but settled for fourth in the javelin, according to his coach, Lyndon Wilson.

Former national junior and Under-23 middle and long distance champion Dennis Horatio managed to sweep the longer events. Horatio, the reigning ISAC and GPF distance champion reportedly completed commanding wins in the 800m, 1,500m and the 3,000m events.

Guyana’s fastest lawman, Winston George, convincingly wrapped up the sprint hat-trick, winning the 60m dash as well as the 100m and 200m conventional races. George, whose pet event is the 400m, told Guyana Times International Sport that after he managed to dominate the other sprint events, he decided to exercise some good sportsmanship and allow other athletes to get a chance to medal in that event. George recently clocked a personal record of 47.17 in the 400m at the Falcon Games in T&T just last month.
