PNCR urges programmes to tackle brain drain

The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) party is calling on the government of Guyana to develop plans and implement sustainable programmes to create economic conditions for sustained growth and increased employment.

At the party’s weekly press briefing on Friday, party member Cheryl Sampson stated that Guyana’s unimpressive economic status makes youth believe there is no sustainable future for them. Sampson congratulated the 1,500 students who recently graduated from the Turkeyen and Tain campuses of the University of Guyana; but stated that, even after their hard work and commitment, many of these students, along with the many graduating from the secondary school system, still have to face the “stark reality” of the uncertainty of employment in Guyana.

These conditions – made real by the performance of the Guyana economy, which has failed to generate increased employment and incomes — have therefore caused students to perceive that  “there is no sustainable future for them in the land of their birth”, Sampson stated.

As a result, she stated, the youth are led to search for “greener pastures”. She provided statistics to show that approximately 2,076 UG students applied for transcripts to seek opportunities abroad during the 2009/2010 period. The statistics also showed that 1,504 students applied for transcripts to use locally, which is also proof of their earnest attempts to find employment.
