The Pitbulls of Georgetown are in a jubilant mood after winning the Male Open final and earning the Gy$1 million first prize

The Pitbulls of Georgetown and Mike’s Wellwoman won the Male and Female Open categories respectively, while J. C. Chandisingh Secondary and L’Aventure Secondary were crowned champions of the Schools’ competition on Sunday evening when action in the inaugural Kares Engineering/Bushy Park Sawmill/ Guyana Softball League T10 Tapeball Cricket competition ended at the National Stadium, Providence.

A fair sized crowd witnessed seven highly competitive matches as the teams battled for the lucrative prizes on offer during the final day of the tournament, which attracted 942 teams.

In the final of the Male Open category, the Pitbulls emerged with a convincing 42-run win over Invaders XI of Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara.

The Pitbulls, boasting a number of playing with ‘hardball’ experience, played clinically throughout the day to cop the top purse of Gy$1 million and the title of inaugural Male champion.

In the grand final under floodlights, the Pitbulls batted first and racked up a challenging 95-6 from the allotted 10 overs. Invaders XI enjoyed the better of early exchanges when fast bowler Chris Sookram (2-11) removed the dangerous Christopher Barnwell off the first ball of the match.

However, the Pitbulls regrouped, and through sensible batting by Trevon Griffith (22), Derwin Christian (21*), Suresh Budhu (14), and Robin Bacchus (13), posted what turned out to be a more than sufficient total.

Invaders XI, who drew the bye to the final after their semi-final opponents were disqualified, never threatened to chase the target, and were restricted to 53-9 when the overs expired, with Christian capping a great day with 2-1. The losing finalists had to settle for the small consolation of Gy$500,000.

Christian also played a crucial role in his team’s semi-final win over powerhouse Albion Cricket Club.

Batting first after winning the toss, the Pitbulls were dismissed for 79 off the final delivery of the innings, with Christian top scoring with 25.

Barnwell contributed 22, while Doodnauth Lallbeharry (2-17), Ramnarine Chattergoon (2-13), and Harrinarine Chattergoon (2-14) were among the wickets.

In their turn at the crease, Albion CC struggled against some accurate bowling by the Pitbulls, and were limited to 63-5 when the overs ran out.

The hard-hitting Jonathon Foo smashed two sixes in 32, while R Chattergoon chipped in with 18.

In the Female Open final, Mike’s Wellwoman outplayed their Georgetown counterparts Trophy Stall Angels by 19 runs to cart off the Gy$500,000 top prize.

Mike’s Wellwoman posted 72-9 with Victoria Bacchus stroking a breezy 30 and Onicka Wallerson contributing a responsible 18. Kavita Yadram, who bagged three wickets in one over, finished with 3-10, while Latoya Toney (2-14) and Angela Waldron (2-17) supported well.

Mike’s Wellwoman had earlier defeated Rose Hall Town Metro Females by four runs in their semi-final clash, while Trophy Stall Angels had crushed 4R Lioness by nine wickets in their other game.

In the opening match of the day – the Female Schools’ final – L’Aventure Secondary whipped IPE Divas XI by 78 runs. Player of the match and skipper, Teshana Douglas, blasted an unbeaten 44 to power L’Aventure to 115-1, the highest total of the day.

Stacey Sugrim added 17 not out, while extras were a healthy 38. IPE Divas XI’s reply went horribly wrong, as they were stifled to 37-8.

Extras counted 20, while Mercedes Alfred picked up 3-5.

J C Chandisingh chalked up a comfortable six- wicket win over St Rose’s in the Male Schools final. St Rose’s chalked up 51-8, with Chetram Nauth making 16.

Arif Chan (2-6), Imzan Ali Nizamudeen (2-8) and skipper Shailendra Shameer (2-9) were the top bowlers for J C Chandisingh, who coasted to victory at 52-4 from 6.4 overs.

Nizamudeen scored 13 to cop the Player of the Match award, while extras were 21.
