Peruvian and Venezuelan charged for illegal entry

A Peruvian and a Venezuelan, who both illegally entered Guyana, were remanded to prison by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry when they appeared at that Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Jose Rodriguez, 25, of Margarita, Venezuela, and Jessica Ruby Escarpaso, 35, of Lima, Peru, both pleaded not guilty to the charge. It is alleged that on December 12, at Springlands, Corentyne, they entered Guyana via sea without the consent of an immigration officer.

The couples do not speak English, so an interpreter, CID Detective Motilall Persaud, was afforded to them, compliments of the state.

Police prosecutor Stephen Telford related that the couple are husband and wife, and they entered Guyana from Cayenne, French Guiana, on December 12 through Springlands.

He stated that, on December 13, the two were travelling in a motor car on the Essequibo Coast when it was intercepted by a police patrol. The couples were questioned about their presence in the region, but unfortunately they were unable to communicate with the police ranks because of the language barrier, he added.

Telford disclosed that the couples were then taken to the Charity Police Station, where they were further questioned and were asked to produce their travel documents. It was then discovered that their passports did not have any entry stamps; so they were told of the allegation, and charged.

The prosecutor applied for bail to be refused, and requested that the matter be transferred to the Springlands Magistrate’s Court for Monday, December 20.  The applications made by the prosecutor were granted.
