Persaud threatens legal action against Solomon over Kwakwani IMC saga

Local Government Minister Ganga Persaud said legal actions will be taken against Region 10 Chairman Sharma Solomon if he moves to establish a council at Kwakwani thus overthrowing the recently-installed Interim Management Committee (IMC) there.

“I am happy that critics of IMC seem to have embraced the concept of IMC. It is sad, however, that whoever is seeking to establish the IMC, in particular, Mr Solomon, has no authority to do so; and so anything, any action taken by Mr Solomon with regards to establishing of any IMC is illegal, an infringement of the law and the course of the law will definitely deal with such action,” Persaud said as he addressed media operatives at the Local Government Ministry on Monday.
He stated that this situation provides yet another case where “persons sharing opposition sympathy seem to be more keen and interested in creating a lawless society… chaos and mischief”, but this will not be tolerated by the ministry.
“Never in our history has any regional chairman sought to so blatantly invoke authority and power in a legal nature that is not vested anywhere in his or her authority,” he said. He warned that Solomon should adhere to advice given by his counterparts.
“I am certain that the regional chairman, Mr Sharma Solomon would have been adequately advised by the political party he represents, and that he would seek to listen to the guidance provided and that he would avoid further embarrassment to his party and more importantly, himself.”
The local government minister made it clear that the IMC, which was installed on July 16 by Minister within the Local Government Ministry Norman Whittaker, will continue to function in keeping with the Constitution of Guyana.
