Owning a home is such an important dream to all Guyanese – a dream which is now a reality for so many

Dear Editor,

Owning a home is such an important dream to all Guyanese; a dream which is now a reality for so many Guyanese families, single parents, and ambitious youths.

We read about the thousands of house lots that are given out every year, and for some it is just a piece of news, but for others, it signifies something greater, something that represents empowerment.

For so many Guyanese owning a home for the first time, this is empowerment in so many ways, because it allows them to make a better life for themselves and their families. A recent article in the media stated that 3,700 house lots have been allocated so far for this year. This is in addition to the thousands already allocated over the years in schemes across the country. Guyana’s landscape has changed drastically over the years, with new housing schemes being developed with the necessary infrastructure. The story also stated that within another month the Housing Ministry will be allocating 1,200 plots on the West Coast of Demerara.

Gaining ownership of a piece of land is easy, and the process is much shorter since the Housing Ministry conducts same-day interviews and has taken its ‘One Stop Shop’ to several parts of the country, processing thousands of applications. Some applications were processed during the ministry’s Building Expo, which was held over the past weekend.

Owning a home previously under the PNC administration was a privilege of the elite, but today, any employed person can be the owner of a home, since this government has made it possible for persons to have ownership of the land. Further, with the title, allotees can access mortgages from a number of commercial banks at low interest rates, since the lowering of the lending ceiling.

Yours truly,
