Opposition Leader taps Sandra Jones as new GECOM commissioner

Sandra Jones, a human resources management and organisational specialist with more than 25 years’ experience has been tipped to be Opposition Leader David Granger’s choice for commissioner of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Guyana Times International was reliably informed.

The consultant, who has vast experience in both public and private sector management and reform in Guyana and the Caribbean, will most likely replace former GECOM Commissioner Robert Williams, who died earlier this year.

Over the past month, there has been much speculation about who would be filling Williams’ place, but when contacted, Granger has assured that he has not concluded discussions on the issue. He said there has been a delay in the announcement of the opposition’s nominee as a result of budget discussions and debates.

He noted too that he completed discussions with the Alliance for Change (AFC), but also has to clear the possible nominations with members of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), the coalition to which he is the executive chairman, along with the People’s National Congress (PNC) to which he is a member. Granger said he is actively working on the selection of a nominee for the post.

However, information being peddled in the media suggests that David Patterson of the Alliance For Change (AFC) will be the next commissioner.

But when asked, Granger would only say that several nominations have been put to him, and he is in the process of selecting a person. As the holder of the constitutional post of leader of the opposition, Granger is required to conduct “meaningful consultations” with the non-governmental parties in the National Assembly.

Attorney Jaya Manickchand was sworn in as commissioner of GECOM to replace Moen Mc Doom, who resigned from that post in February.

There are three People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/ C) commissioners and two representing the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/ R) now APNU. The PPP/ C commissioners are Manickchand, Dr Keshav Mangal and Mahamood Shaw, while Vincent Alexander and Charles Corbin represent the APNU.
