Avian Rodrigues and Priyanna Ramdhani emerged as the outstanding players when the National Sports Commission ( NSC) Under- 19, two- day junior badminton tournament wrapped up on Saturday at the Queen’s College courts.
The tournament, which attracted students from schools in Georgetown, was played in the Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles formats.
Rodrigues won the Triple Crown (Singles, Doubles, and Mixed), while Under- 11 Pan American bronze medallist, P. Ramdhani, won the Girls Doubles, and placed third in the Singles.
Rodrigues, a University of Guyana student, defeated fellow national player Nicholas Ali of Queen’s College 21- 19, 24- 22 in the final of the Boys Singles.
He later teamed up with Ali to beat Bishop’s High Christopher Persaud and Marian Academy’s Avinash Odit 21- 5, 21- 8 in the Boys Doubles final.
Rodrigues found another winning partner in Greer Jackson ( QC) as they combined to overpower Ali and St. Roses’ Pricilla Moore in the Mixed Doubles final 18- 21, 21- 12, 21- 9.
In the Girls’ Singles final, Jackson overwhelmed Angelica Holder 21- 5, 21- 8, while P. Ramdhani defeated Moore 21- 18, 21- 5 in the third place playoff.
P. Ramdhani of Marian’s Academy and Angelica Holder of QC prevailed in the Girls Doubles final by silencing the pair of Jackson and Moore 21- 8, 2- 18.
The competition will continue later this month with rivalry in the Under- 11, 13, 15 and 17 age groups.
