Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility also for Culture, Youth & Sport Dr George Norton praised the Guyana Karate College (GKC) for hosting a successful grading exercise for 2017 while continuing to promote the ancient arts.
Students from its various Dojos assembled last Friday evening at its main impermanent Dojo located in Thomas Lands for the third of the yearly triennial rank examinations.
Minister Norton was present for the entire examination which saw approximately 70 students participating. The Minister told the Karatekas that the competition in the international arena is getting tougher and tougher day-by-day. He advised that if the students of the Guyana Karate College are to retain the top positions they achieved at previous international tournaments, they will have to work harder, faster and stronger.
The Minister further encouraged the students to “follow their dreams” and to recognise that “discipline leads to success”, adding that he was delighted to learn that this year the GKC which is celebrating their 11th anniversary, is hard at work as well, completing the construction of their own building (Headquarters and Main Dojo) at Liliendall on the East Coast of Demerara
The next tournament will be hosted under the International Karate Daigaku set for Bridgetown, Barbados from August 16-19, 2018. Minister Norton also assured that he and his Government would leave no stone unturned to ensure improved facilities are made available to our sports persons.
He expressed confidence that all of the Karatekas who will be attending the next world championships will put in their best efforts and work harder to bring bigger glory to the nation.
The grading examinations included the other GKC Dojos counting in the Guyana Karate College Sophia Juvenile Holding Centre Dojo and the Guyana Karate College West Coast Demerara Dojo.
