No bail for alleged Chinese narco-trafficker

A Chinese national who told police he has been living in Guyana since 2002 was on Monday charged with trafficking in narcotics.

Yang Yxie, 32, was refused bail when he appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court. The man was caught by police carrying the substance in a black plastic bag concealed in his private area at the Guyoil Gas Station in the vicinity of the New Amsterdam Market.

A taxi driver, who witnessed the arrest, told this newspaper that he saw the police ranks jump out of a car and accost the defendant who had just exited a white AT 212. A scuffle ensued, and after subduing the suspect it was noticed that a black plastic bag had fallen out of the man’s ‘crotch’ area of the man’s crotch. A senior police source told Guyana Times that the man did not speak fluent English and, therefore, it was difficult to question him.

On Monday he pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded to prison.

At the time of his arrest the defendant was operating a restaurant in Canefield Settlement, after moving from a Sherriff Street, Georgetown location about three months ago.

He will make another appearance on October 11.
