Steve Ninvalle was re-elected unopposed as president of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) when the Annual General Meeting was held at Olympic House on Sunday morning.
Also, returning unopposed was Secretary Sean Richmond while veteran administrator Eustace Cuffy was re-elected vice president, along with Gordon Nedd and Carl Graham. Nedd and Graham replaced vice presidents Maurice Rajkumar and Jeff Roberts.
Dexter Patterson was returned as treasurer while Kesa Chase replaced Keith Campbell as assistant secretary treasurer. The Public Relations Officer is Mark Younge.
Addressing the affiliated members after the elections, Ninvalle said that boxing must be put first and not self-aggrandisement.
“You have got to love boxing, if not jump off now since in the past there were some people who were concerned with self-aggrandisement which left room whether intentionally or unintentionally for a dictatorship.
Everybody has to understand that they have to pull their weight,” Ninvalle warned.
Ninvalle also spoke about the highs and lows he encountered during his three-year tenure. He said the worst low was the absconding of three boxers to the U.S. on their way from the Commonwealth Games in India in 2010.
By that same token he said that 2010 was a good year with boxers winning medals at the ALBA and CAC Games, along with success at the 2011 Ronald Wilson Memorial tournament in Barbados.
Looking ahead, Ninvalle said that boxers should be able to medal at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil since GABA has submitted a four-year action plan to ensure same.
Ninvalle, who is also the deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, said that the GABA will be working closely with the government for assistance to ensure that the sport and its boxers are developed.
With that in mind, the new executive is expected to hit the ground running with the staging of the National Open Under-16 Championships scheduled for December 14.
