NGOs making

Dear Editor,

There are many organisations in Guyana which are making a positive difference in the lives of many citizens. Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in particular have been at the forefront and are working alongside government on various projects, both at the community and the national levels, and what we see today are exceptional results in various fields, such as poverty reduction, HIV/ AIDS, literacy, and agriculture among others.

I believe that it would be good to highlight such achievements from time to time to give publicity to these groups and the difference they are making in the society. This is not only necessary for the sake of publicity, but also helps these organisations to get continued funding from donors as it shows they are making progress.

I am personally familiar with some community projects which have had to close their doors as a result of not having monies to continue operations.

Editor, I wish to use the opportunity to say congrats to Artistes in Direct Support (A. I. D. S.). This organisation is not usually in the public’s eye, but I know for a fact that they are working in collaboration with the various government departments and agencies to reduce HIV/ AIDS further. They have also done exceptional work on the issue of dealing with stigma and discrimination. Guyana as a whole has done exceedingly well in reducing HIV/ AIDS and such results would not be possible without interventions such as those from A. I. D. S.

Editor, A. I. D. S. is currently celebrating its 20th year of serving the country. The organisation consists of staff and volunteers of varying ages and experiences, who use their talents in music, drama and dance to promote HIV/ AIDS/ STI education through the performing arts, media and peer education.

Also, for many years, the organisation has been providing telephone as well as walk-in counselling services, and also distributes HIV/ AIDS related material in various communities across the country. As a result of their outreach sessions, a vibrant programme working with commercial sex workers was established. Congratulations to all the staff, and especially young people who work as volunteers.

I am positive that the group will continue to receive support from the international donors, as for sure they have the potential, drive, and expertise to achieve greater results.

Yours truly,

J Deodat
