The glass-back squash courts are built to international specifications
Guyana will be hosting the Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Caribbean Junior Squash Championships this July. And according to president of the Guyana Squash Association (GSA), Andrew Arjoon, matches may be played at the soon-to-be-completed public squash facility.
The multi-million-dollar facility, which is expected to be called the National Racquet Centre, is located at Camp Street and Woolford Avenue. Formerly known as the Non-Pariel Tennis Courts, the facility will also include two side-by-side glass-back squash courts enclosed in a concrete building.
Arjoon reportedly visited the facility yesterday and told Guyana Times International Sport that his association is definitely considering the possibility of having some of the matches of the prestigious regional tournament played there.
“To my knowledge, it is one of very few public squash courts in the Caribbean, and it has two glass-backs, side-by-side squash courts, which is how most of the courts in the Caribbean are built,” Arjoon said.

The Georgetown Club, which is presently the facility where the majority of squash in Guyana is played, has only one glass-back court, and the two courts at that venue are back-to-back rather than side-by-side.
Arjoon said that his association is considering utilising the facility for the hosting of some of the matches for CASA, because: “It’s a brand new facility. They [the courts] have been built to international regulations, the floor is in decent condition, and the whole court is in fairly top-notch shape.”
While they still have not put anything in ink as yet, Arjoon said, if his association were to utilise the facility, matches will still be held at the Georgetown Club. The tournament will be held during the second week of July, and should see the participation of several Caribbean nations, such as Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, countries of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OESC) and Barbados.
Guyana is the reigning overall champion, and has won that title for the past six years. In last year’s staging of the tournament, which was held in Grand Cayman Islands, the Guyana girls’ team won their fifth consecutive team title, while Ashley Khalil, Victoria Arjoon, Mary Fung-A-Fat and Jean-Claude Jeffrey won individual titles. Digicel will be the title sponsors for this year’s tournament.
