New APNU MP sworn in

Rennita Williams became the A Partnership for National Unity’s (newest Member of Parliament (MP) after taking the oath on Wednesday afternoon in the National Assembly.
She replaced the ailing Richard Allen, of the Region One constituency who collapsed during the middle of the budget debate last week. Before being sworn in, Speaker of the House Raphael Trotman noted that the new MP was required to subscribe to the oath as required by Article 167 of the Constitution.

Following this, Williams took the oath administered by Clerk of the National Assembly Sherlock Isaacs.
The Speaker was the first to welcome Williams to the National Assembly on behalf of himself and the staff of Parliament and offered their assistance in whatever way possible. He also told her that she has joined the Parliament at a very interesting and important moment. “I dare say that the people of Region One and your party expect much of you.”
Opposition Leader David Granger said “Although the circumstances of her entry were unusual, APNU is confident because of her commitment and service in the region, she will be able to discharge her duties at this time.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds extended a warm welcome to Williams on behalf of the PPP/ C, noting that she has joined the Parliament at a captivating time. “I extend a warm welcome on behalf of the People’s Progressive Party and at the same time wishing a speedy recovery to Allen… Ms William, you have joined the budget at an intriguing time.”
Foreign Affairs Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett also welcomed Williams, stating that she is happy to see another woman entering the House, more so an Amerindian person.
