‘Naya Zamana 17’ for Sept. 1 in Georgetown

The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha will next month host its annual dance and theatrical production, Naya Zamana, at the National Cultural Centre in Georgetown.
This year, the production which annually attracts sold-out audiences and is a fixture on Guyana’s cultural calendar, enters its 17th year and it promises to be an exciting one. The event will be held on September 1. Inspired by Bollywood films which have for generations entertained the world, Naya Zamana 17 takes the form of a theatrical spectacular, and is titled “Bollywood Dreams”. Packed with the Bollywood charm of incredible colours and costumes, over-the-top sets and lots of ‘bling’, “Bollywood Dreams” tells a vibrant story of unlikely dreams, perseverance and destiny, through the media of dance, drama and music. The experience will be close to watching a movie live in action, the sabha said in a release.
The story pits two childhood friends, played by the Dharmic Nritya Sangh’s senior dancers Indhira Harry and Zahrah Alli, against each other; one in relentless pursuit of her dream to become a big star in Bollywood and the other a true romantic.
Handsome actor Yash Kapoor finds himself caught in the web of jealousy and love portrayed through diverse dances and chart-topping Bollywood music. Will stardom and the big screen belong to anyone? Will true love triumph? Can friendship withstand the test of the “Bollywood Dream”?
Featuring stunning dance sequences choreographed by Dr Vindhya Persaud, set to a mixture of classic and new Bollywood tracks spanning several eras, Naya Zamana 17 “Bollywood Dreams” promises to be a feast for the senses.
It will feature performances by 65 talented young people and children who have been working for several months to perfect their sequences. U. S. choreographer Amit Shah is cast as Yash Kapoor. Tickets for the production cost Gy$ 2000 and Gy$ 1500, and are available at the Dharmic Sanskritik Kendra, Red Mango on Robb Street, Bhagwan’s on Water Street and the National Cultural Centre. Naya Zamana 17 is sponsored by Digicel, EZjet, Namilco and NTN.
