Bubbling with confi dence following his success at the qualification tournament, Sham Khan has brought his ‘ A’ game to the National Junior Chess championship, and after four rounds, he is comfortably in the lead with three victories and a draw. After getting past Carlos Patterson in the opening round at Olympic House at the weekend, Khan shocked reigning national junior champion Cecil Cox in round two, and then defeated Ryan McKay in the third round.
He was a knight up against Raan Motilall, but failed to secure the win and had to settle for a draw.
In the opening round, Cox defeated McKay; brothers Ron and Raan Motilall played to a draw, and Suhai Feng got the better of Rashad Hussain.
In round two, Hussain rebounded to beat McKay; Ron Motilall and Feng played to a draw, while Patterson and Raan Motilall had to settle for the same result.
In round three, Raan Motilall and Cox played to a draw; Patterson defeated Feng, and Ron Motilall defeated Hussain.
In round four, Ron Motilall defeated McKay; Hussain defeated Patterson, and Cox and Feng played to a draw.
Khan is atop of the points table with 3.5; Ron Motilall has three, while Feng, Cox, and Hussain are level on two points each. Patterson is on 1.5, while McKay is yet to score.
The final two rounds will be played at Olympic House Saturday.
