National Draughts Competition slated for October 29 and 30

The Guyana Draughts Association’s Annual National Draughts Competition is scheduled for October 29 and 30 at the Mildred Mansfield Youth Club (Dorcas Club) on Durban Street in Werk-en-Rust Georgetown.

With the main focus of identifying prospects to join the national team for the upcoming Open International Draughts Competition, the segment on the 100-square boards would be played on Saturday October 29, while the regular game on the board with 64 squares would be played on Sunday October 30. The regular game will be played in the A, B and C divisions.

Saturday’s competition will feature Jairam, who was undefeated in Suriname, along with other recognised players such as Ulric Braithwaite, Carlton Simon and Khemraj Pooranmall.

On Sunday in the “A” Division, the current local champion, Elton Lambert, will be defending his title against Carlton Simon and Wilfred Robinson. Godfrey George will be making his debut in the “A” Division and he promises to be a strong contender.

The “B” Division is usually the highlight of the day, and this year this division is expected to live up to its billing as Elridge Grandison, Jairam and Ulric brathwaite square off in the final showdown.

Trophies and other prizes would be at stake. All draught players countrywide, both professionals and novices, are invited to participate in this major event.
