National Aquatic Center to be open to public soon

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport is working to open the National Aquatic Center at Liliendaal to the public and, is currently seeking suitable persons to take up the positions as lifeguards, which is a necessary safety requirement.

Once these positions are filled, this state-of-the-art facility will be made available to the wider Guyanese public.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony during a recent interview with the Government Information Agency (GINA) said thus far, the primary beneficiaries of the Olympic-size swimming pool are people who are into competitive swimming such as members of the Guyana Swimming Association.
The pool itself was built with competition in mind and as such, athletes have been using the facility to practice, particularly those who competed at the recently concluded Olympic Games in London.
The pool recently came in for high praise during the hosting of the Guyana leg of the 18th Goodwill Games. This 50 metre swimming pool is one of few such facilities in the Caribbean and adds to the number of flagship conveniences built under the PPP/C administration.
Meanwhile, a number of coaching sessions, led by a coach from Japan, have been going on at the Colgrain Pool. Additionally, a Cuban coach is also conducting programmes at that facility.
This year’s national budget made provisions for the construction of a 25-metre warm-up pool that would be constructed within the precincts of the National Aquatic Centre.
The Center was officially commissioned in November 2011.
