N.Y.- based Guyanese observe Gita Jayanthi

Dear Editor,

Gita Jayanthi or day of revelation of the holy Bhagavad-Gita, the sacred text of Hindus, was observed on Tuesday December 6 by Hindus in New York. Hindus of Guyanese origin in the U.S. have been celebrating this festival since the 1990s after establishing a large community in the tri-state area.

The Holy Gita was written some 6,000 years ago and is thought to be the oldest holy book in the universe. It is a fundamental scripture of Hinduism. Gita Jayanti is celebrated worldwide by all Hindus (followers of Sanatan Dharma), who revere Bhagavad Gita as their Divine Mother because She teaches (in a non-sectarian and scientific manner) how to re-establish lost relationship with God Almighty (The Supreme).

Several New York temples held special poojas to mark the auspicious occasion of the birth of the Gita which is revered by Hindus worldwide. Hindus also fasted on this day and conducted special prayers at home.

Excerpts from the Gita were read to congregations who conducted yajna that day. At the American Sevashram Sangha in Jamaica, Queens, the sister branch of the Cove and John Ashram, Swami Vidyanand Maharaj conducted a special katha from the Gita urging people to live a life described in the holy book. The Ashram held a three night discourse led by Swami Vidyanand. He appealed to listeners to follow the teachings of Lord Krishna and live a good life.

Yours sincerely

Vishnu Visram
