Murray group supports the Greenidge candidacy

The Winston Murray faction of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) party has said it is fully backing former Finance Minister Carl Greenidge to be that party’s presidential candidate for general elections later this year.

The group, which was formed to support Murray as the nominee before he died late last year, said in a statement on Wednesday that it was persuaded by Greenidge’s qualifications and sterling personal qualities. “All members of the group, including Dr Richard Van West-Charles, have agreed to give their unanimous support to Mr Greenidge (in his bid) to become the Presidential Candidate for the PNCR,” the group said in the statement.

Greenidge, David Granger, Dr Faith Harding, Basil Williams and James Bond have been nominated to contest for the presidential nominee position. After a series of town hall meetings that are currently taking place, the PNCR will hold a Special Congress, on February 26, at which delegates would vote for the nominee of their choice to become the party’s presidential candidate.

Also in its statement, the ‘Murray group’ said it has come to (members’) attention that there have been misinformed opinions about (members’) unity, cohesion and structure. These opinions, the group said, are unfounded and bear no relationship to its reality and internal workings. According to the group, since the passing of Murray, the group has remained steadfast in its goal to transform the PNCR, deepening its democratic culture and providing the best possible leadership in the context of the overwhelming problems facing Guyana. To this end, it has been working assiduously with a particular focus of doing all within its power to garner resources and to deploy its personnel in such a way as to ensure that these goals are achieved for all Guyanese, the group statement said.

As regards the nominations for the presidential candidates for the PNCR, the group said, a number of its members have found favour with the group, in keeping with the spirit and letter of the resolution passed at the last General Council of the PNCR, that a consensus candidate was the best possibility for the PNCR. Additionally, the group noted that, until his recent return from abroad, Greenidge, who was not a member of the group, had received a number of nominations across the country. It was agreed that the group should have dialogue with Greenidge to get an understanding of his vision and focus for the party and the country. Some members of the group did not receive their nominations as a result of a miscommunication with the relevant authorities at Congress Place. Mr Carl Greenidge and Mr James Bond have been identified as presidential candidates for the PNCR, the group said. The group also said that Greenidge has had the opportunity to share with its members his vision for the party and the country.
