Multimillion dollar Mahaica Market completed

Vendors and consumers in the Mahaica area of Guyana are to soon begin benefitting from government’s Gy$82 million investment into the Mahaica Market, which is on schedule for an early April opening.
Local Government and Regional Development Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Collin Croal said Dookie Contracting Services has completed the building of the market and the ministry and the Neighbhourhood Democratic Council (NDC) of Unity village are now moving to the allocation of stalls.

The building will house 104, eight by eight stalls, inclusive of seven meat and 11 fish stalls, with the southern side of the market designated for fruit and vegetable vending.
A market committee, comprising the NDC, the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) and vendors’ representative, is soon to be established. This committee will assign the stalls and decide the final arrangement of the market, among other things.
The upper northern section of the market will house the NDC building.
The committee will give first consideration to 66 stallholders of the former Mahaica Market. Persons allocated a spot will be responsible for constructing his/ her own stall.
Croal also explained that the ministry will be seeking Cabinet’s approval for resources to facilitate some revetment work aback of the market.
