Young people on the Essequibo Coast and neighbouring islands now have an opportunity to study away from home at a cheaper cost with the construction of a multimillion dollar dormitory at the Essequibo Technical Institute. The facility was recently handed over to the institute.
The dormitory, which became operable in October, accommodates over 112 students from Mabaruma, Waramuri, Kabakaburi, Leguan, Bartica and Wakenaam. According to principal of the institute, Michael Turner, the dormitory has the capacity to accommodate 44 boys and 68 girls.
Turner said the dormitory was constructed by the Finance Ministry in collaboration with the Region Two administration. According to Turner, the institute is usually overwhelmed with applications from various regions on a yearly basis. He added that many applications were left pending previously due to lack of space, and as such, he noted that the construction of the dormitory will address this situation.
The principal lauded the government for erecting the dormitory, noting that it provides young people with opportunities they never had before.
The principal said the children at the institute are being counselled on a weekly basis and are supervised by a dorm mother and father.
The construction of the dorm has provided employment opportunities for three cooks and two cleaners.
