More professionalism needed from the management of West Indies Cricket

Dear Editor,

The Pakistan series is over, but cricket fans across Guyana are still fuming about the recent backbiting story involving the West Indies Cricket Board and some players, where the slandering of players’ reputations went overboard.

Cricket fans highly disapprove the way the cases of Chris Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul were handled.

Like most of the fans, I feel the board’s approach was highly unprofessional and unethical.

Editor, international athletes, especially those that achieved outstanding records over the course of their careers, should be respected at all times, especially by the boards which govern them, because, without those athletes and their exceptional performances, sport would not be what it is today.

I believe that every cricketer (junior and senior) should be given opportunity to object to decisions and to give their opinions. To sack and ‘bad mouth’ players just because they do not toe the line is wrong. This is what I call poor management, and the West Indies Cricket Board must explain to the public what really happened.

Whether the fans buy a ticket or tune in to their TV or radio stations, they are spending money and time, hence they deserve to see the players who can play the best, and not those who chose to “toe the line”. I hope this matter between these players and the board would be resolved by the time the India-West Indies series starts, which is in another couple of days’ time.

This is the best direction for the game. Also, I hope the fans would forget the unpleasant situation and continue to rally around the West Indies team, regardless of who the final eleven are. They deserve our support.

Yours sincerely,

Marsha Yarde
