More local players for Caribbean Cup – Shabazz

– Golden Jaguars to contest Group Two from October 21-25

Guyana’s Golden Jaguars will begin their quest for supremacy in the Caribbean Cup football tournament in less than two weeks, and Head Coach, Jamaal Shabazz, said a “slightly different squad” will compete in the event from the one that is currently part of the Brazil 2014 World Cup Qualifiers.

Speaking at a Guyana Football Federation (GFF) press conference recently, Shabazz said that the management of the team will be looking to expose as many local players as possible during the competition. With the Caribbean Cup not being played on FIFA dates, it means that the foreign-based players will not be released from their respective clubs, thereby presenting an excellent opportunity to give meaningful exposure to the locally based ball weavers.
Shabazz said this scenario will give the players, who have been in constant training under coach Wayne Dover, a chance at tasting high-quality, competitive football. “Seventy percent local based, 30 percent foreign based. I think the reason why we had the local based in training and being exposed since February this year was to come to this moment when we play in the Caribbean Cup,” Shabazz explained.
This means young local talents such as Trayon Bobb, Daniel Wilson, Colin Nelson and Pernell Shultz will be given a chance to play in the Caribbean Cup. The tournament will be played on the island of St Lucia, with the Golden Jaguars, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Curacao making up Group Two. That group of games will be played between October 21 and 25 at the Beausejour Stadium.
Coming out of the Caribbean Cup competition, four territories will also earn spots in the 2013 CONCACAF (Confederation of North America, Central America and Caribbean Football) Gold Cup. A total of 25 teams are battling for those four spots. (Avinash Ramzan)
