Former junior national guard Richard Mohandatt in action during the Georgetown versus Linden Friendly Basketball Series

Guyanese teenage sensation Richard Mohandatt created quite an impression in the South Pacific Play ground in Brooklyn, New York on Sunday, July 15, during the Georgetown versus Linden Friendly Basketball Series.

The 18-year-old junior national guard, who migrated to the U. S. A. last March, made his debut in Game One of the three-game series and left a lasting impression to help Georgetown defeat Linden 83–78. The two-time junior national guard, who originally hailed from Berbice, came off the bench and scored nine points to go along with four assists and four steals.

According to reports reaching Guyana Times International Sport, Mohandatt dazzled the crowd with precise crossovers and ball handling skills as he unselfishly passed the ball to team mates.

In one play he (Mohandatt) brought the crowd to its feet as he penetrated the key and changed direction in mid-air while switching the ball to his left hand to avoid three defenders before scoring.

Mohandatt scored 19 points in the Inter- Guiana Games final last year to lead all scorers for Guyana. A few days before he departed the Land of Many Waters, Mohandatt was awarded the Youth Basketball Guyana Challenge Series’ Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, after making it to the final and averaging close to 30 points per game.

In Sunday’s match up in Brooklyn, it was Mohandatt’s teammate, Ashford Johnson, who ran away with the MVP award after scoring 25 points, including a few sensational fast-break dunks. Johnson also had three blocks and three steals.

Thirty-two-year-old former national player Desmond Herod, who played college ball for Seton Hall, also registered 20 points to help GT to the five- point win. Herod also managed eight steals and four rebounds, while Ronald Atkins had ten points and four rebounds.

Former Bishops’ High School student Marlon Thornton, who played with Brooklyn College, only managed to score two points. Bounty Colts’ forward Tristan Lake registered three points.
