Modernization of the Guyana Police Force moving apace

The Home Affairs Ministry has hosted the first ever Senior Officers’ Retreat, engaging the leadership of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) at the Grand Coastal Inn, Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara.

Delivering the opening address, Minister Rohee said that the Force is at a critical stage of its development, as it is on the path of modernization, like all other sectors of government.

“This retreat is expected to lay a firm foundation and the enabling environment for the all-round institutional and human resource development of the Force over the coming years,” the Government Information Agency quoted Rohee as saying.

He said that, with regards to the public safety and security, institutional modernization of the GPF will be a critical role in this upgrading process. As such, there is need for thorough discussion and analysis.

“With the establishment of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Oversight on the Security Sector, the Force has to prepare itself for greater civilian oversight and scrutiny, to enhance transparency and accountability, he said.” Additionally, under the modernization component of the Citizens’ Security Programme (CSP), there will be more robust oversight of the GPF by the Home Affairs Ministry.

“These are healthy developments for the Force that will assist greatly in its bid to improve its standards; and when the Force moves forward, society as a whole moves forward as well,” the minister posited.

Under the coordination of the CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS), the CARIPASS is another step in the movement towards creating standardised border control facilities within CARICOM, including training, entry and exit procedures, and travel documents.

The CARIPASS will also assist the region in the global fight against identity theft and illegal migration, given that the document is matched to the cardholder using both biometric and biographic data captured upon enrollment.
