Mitchell bags Guyana’s first 200m medal in Carifta Games history – George takes silver in 800 metres

Local sprint star Tirana Mitchell made history by becoming the first Guyanese to medal in a 200 metre final at the Junior Carifta Games in The Bahamas on Monday. After finishing sixth in the final of the under-17 100 metre on the first day of the competition, Mitchell returned to cop a bronze medal in the final of the under-17 female 200 metre with a time of 24.05s, finishing just behind Natalliah Whyte 23.65s (Jamaica) and Jenae Ambrose 24.04s (The Bahamas) respectively.
Earlier in the day, rising distance star Cassey George struck once again after winning gold in the under-17 1500 metre on the first day of the competition.

In what can be said to be an event rivalry, George was beaten into second place with a time of 2: 12.64s by Kyrah Faheemah Scraders of Bermuda who ran 2: 11.62s. Scraders came in closely behind George in the 1500 metres on day one for the silver.
Jason Yaw who won bronze in the 400 metre boys under-17 on day one ran well in the final of the 200 metres but was outdone by four other athletes. Yaw ran a very quick time of 21.96s.
Overseas-based under-17 athlete Ashley Tasher finished 11th in the girls under-17 long jump with a jump of 5.27 metres while local triple jumper finished sixth in the girls under- 20 triple jump with a jump of 12.14 metres.
Meanwhile, Guyana took part in their first relay event in Carifta Games history when the under-17 girls ran the 4×400 metres event and missed the podium with a fourth place finish with a time of 3: 55.57s.
The team started with George handing over to Tasher on the second leg, while Avon Samuels who finished seventh in the under-17 girls 200 metres took over on the third leg before handing over to Mitchell for the finish.
