Miss Guyana Universe 2011 on a mission to make top 15

Miss Guyana Universe, Kara Lord

With just about two weeks to go to the Miss Universe pageant in Sao Paulo, Brazil, newly-crowned Miss Guyana Universe is making it her mission to “get Guyana’s name called” in the top 15.

“I know what I want, and I strive very hard towards getting there, and that’s what I’m aiming towards,” reigning Miss Guyana Universe, Kara Lord, said during a meeting with her designer. Lord is about to embark on an intensive regimen with trainer Derek Moore as she begins her preparations for the international leg of the pageant.

The leggy beauty said she was “very confident” about her chances of placing in the top 10, but was very clear that the task would not be an easy one. “There is still a lot more that needs to be done in making sure that I am ready for every aspect of the competition,” she said.

Lord was crowned on July 16 in the Miss Guyana Universe pageant held at the Princess Hotel Poolside. Lord triumphed over eight other beauties for the chance to represent Guyana at the Miss Universe 2011 pageant in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

“Kara is a very determined young lady. From the very first day I met her I was very impressed with the way she carries herself. I know that she has a strong will, and that is a plus,” trainer Derek Moore gushed about the queen and her preparations for the pageant.

Meantime, franchise holder of the Miss Guyana Universe, Odinga Lumumba, expressed confidence in Lord doing well at the pageant in Brazil. However, he noted that the pageant industry here is still young and needs more intense preparations in selecting a contestant to represent Guyana.

“Preparation is a natural thing. If you are beautiful and intelligent, you don’t need much preparation. “Confidence is the most important factor here.

“Guyana is not like Jamaica or Trinidad, where people put a lot of money into beauty and into modelling. We are still in the peripheral beauty of understanding the business…. and because we have not achieved that point in our industry, it is very difficult to get sponsors,” Lumumba revealed.

However, he said that, like himself, there are others who are working tirelessly towards the development of a vibrant pageant industry in Guyana.
