Minorities in Ontario praise govt’s efforts in promoting diversity

Guyanese and other minorities in Ontario have showered praises on the Government of Ontario for promoting diversity in the province.  Some 100,000 Guyanese are settled in the province.
Ontario has been named as Canada’s best diversity employer for the fifth consecutive year. It is not known how many Guyanese are employed in government posts in Ontario, but it is believed that the government (of the province) has employed more Guyanese and immigrant groups than any other province in the country.
A publication titled “Canada’s Top 100 Employers”, published by Mediacorp, reviews workplace policies and practices of employers across the country to determine the Best Diversity Employers.  This year’s title goes to the Ontario Government, said the publication.
Guyanese leaders and community groups in Ontario believe the government will do a lot more to improve relations among the diverse ethnic groups in the province.
The Ontario Minister of Government Services Harinder Takhar showcased the Best Diversity Employer award that the ministry received in the presence of a small assembly of public servants and a handful of advocates, among whom were Guyanese.
Shamira Ramdhany, a Guyanese who is Director of Diversity for the province is confident the Government of Ontario will be successful in pushing the diversity and inclusion mantra because “there is political will inside the province’s cabinet”.
Ramdhany and other Guyanese feel that promoting diversity is extremely important and noted that they were told that the Ontario government wants to make a difference in the diversity of the provincial government.
However, Ramdhany said there is a role for the community in the overall pursuit of making diversity and inclusion real. She said that it is important for community members to tell them (Government) what they are doing right in the public service and what needs to be done differently.
