Miner charged with Mahdia murder

Murder accused Shawn Sampson

Shawn Sampson of Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court One on Tuesday to answer a charge of murder.

Sampson is accused of murdering fellow miner Shane Jacobs, 30, of Lot Three Stewartville, West Coast Demerara on April 8, 2011 at the Pamela Backdam, Potaro River, Essequibo county.

The court was told by Police prosecutor Stephen Telford that the victim and the accused had a confrontation on the landing when a fight broke out and Sampson disarmed Jacobs of his knife. The knife was then used to stab Jacobs twice. The accused then escaped. Jacobs was rushed to the Mahdia Hospital where he later died. Sampson was arrested and charged with murder.

The case was transferred to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court for April 20, 2011.

On April 11, 2011 a post-mortem report revealed that Jacobs died as a result of perforation to the lung and heart from a single stab wound.

Witnessing the post-mortem performed by pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh was father of the deceased, Audie Rodrigues.

Rodrigues told Guyana Times International that his son bore several stab wounds about his body, including to his hand, finger, forehead and chest. “He had a big gash to his chest, which I assume resulted in his death.”
