MIF launches photo contest on gender in region

The Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) of the Inter- American Development Bank (IDB) is inviting amateurs and professionals to participate in its 2011 photo contest, which seeks to show how women and men in Latin America and the Caribbean are challenging traditionally-held gender norms and stereotypes in the workplace.

Participants must be at least 18 years old, and the deadline for applications is September 1, 2011.

Twenty-five finalists will be selected for the contest, being held under the theme “In Focus: Shifting Gender Perspectives”, and the top contestants and winners will showcase their work at the 2011 Inter-American Forum on Microenterprise Foromic 2011 in San José, Costa Rica, from October 10 – 12. The winner will receive a prize of US$3000.

The entries should portray women in traditionally male- dominated fields or men in non-traditional employment in any of the IDB borrowing member countries.

An expert panel of judges will assess the submissions based on originality, effectiveness in questioning gender norms, technical excellence, composition, overall impact, and artistic merit.

The 25 images will be part of the permanent photo gallery that will be showcased on the IDB website in a virtual exhibit at the IDB Fall 2011 programme and in MIF publications. The contest is an important part of the MIF’s gender mainstreaming initiative being carried out in collaboration with the International Center for Research on Women.

The MIF seeks to become a transformative leader in technical assistance for gender integration in the private sector, and a broker for regional partnerships that support gender equality and women’s empowerment in the region.
