On Thursday, January13th, President Bharrat  Jagdeo swore in four members of the Police Service Commission (PSC) and one member of the Teaching Service Commission (TSC).

This group included the Chairman of the PSC, Dennis Balkissoon Morgan. The other members of the commission include: Harold Oswald Martin, Duncan Clarke, Lloyd Carvil Smith and Ganga Persaud. Chief Education Officer, Olatto Joseph Sam, was also sworn in at the ceremony as a member of the Teaching Service Commission.

Morgan told members of the media in an invited comment that, since the life of the last PSC ended in October of last year, the body must now meet to have discussions as to the tasks it will undertake.“Our task right now is to sit and prioritise what areas we will work on first, and work on that,” he said.

He explained, however, that all the members have good working knowledge of both the Guyana Police Force and the Police Service Commission, and will be able to make fair decisions in their tasks. “All of the members have already held senior positions in the Guyana Police Force, with the exception of Mr Smith. All of the members have once held the position of commissioner or assistant commissioner before retiring from the force,” he said.

The functions of the PSC include dealing with appeals, promotional and disciplinary matters, dismissals and several other issues relating to the Guyana Police Force. Morgan has held the position of chairman of the PSC for the past few years.
