Meeting to improve Guyanese exports announced

A bilateral meeting will be convened shortly to improve Guyanese exports to Brazil, as part of efforts to balance trade between the two countries.

This was announced by Brazilian Ambassador to Guyana, Luis Gilberto Seixas D’Andrade, at a reception to celebrate the South American giant’s 188th Independence anniversary.

Brazil, he said, has recognised that the imbalance of trade is in its favour, and will be working to restore equilibrium in this respect.

With the advent of the Takutu River Bridge, Brazil/Guyana relations are reported to have improved, with some US$17 million in trade recorded in 2009.

Ambassador D’Andrade believes that the Lethem road will complement the bridge and “open the possibility for new ventures in trade, as well as more sophisticated logistical operations, including overseas destinations”.

He also announced that Guyana’s intent to open a consulate in Boa Vista is giving more impetus to the already flourishing relations.

Brazil and Guyana already enjoy technical cooperation in the areas of aquaculture and corn and rice production, and the ambassador disclosed there is an interest in the energy sector, in line with Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy.

Meanwhile, in delivering brief remarks, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds congratulated Brazil on this significant milestone, as he toasted to the long life of their president and for peace and prosperity to reign.
