Mechanic slaps wife who refused to cook

Hanzel Daniels of Oronoque, Port Kaituma, North West District made an appearance before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on June 14 to answer to a charge of assault.

He pleaded guilty to the charge, which stated that, on June 11 at 15:30h, he assaulted Joycelyn Henry. The matter was reported and the defendant was charged.

Police prosecutor Vishnu Hunt, presenting the facts of the case, stated that the defendant and the virtual complainant are husband and wife, and on the day in question, the defendant and the virtual complainant had a misunderstanding and the defendant became angry and dealt the victim one slap.

The accused, when asked if he had anything to say, stated that on the date mentioned, his uncle was next door weeding a piece of land when his brush cutter stopped working. He said that since he is a mechanic by profession, he went to assist his uncle in repairing the brush cutter. However, by 12:00h, he took a break and went to inquire from his wife what she was cooking. He returned next door to continue helping his uncle, and at 15:00h he went back home and asked her about lunch, and she replied, “Why you can’t go and cook yourself?” It is at this time, he said, he became angry and frustrated and slapped the woman. He further stated that that was the first time he had hit his wife.

The defendant was fined Gy$15,000 together with a six-month bond to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.
