A 40-year-old mechanic was killed last Tuesday morning when a minibus slammed into him on Aubrey Backer Road, South Ruimveldt. Dead is Patrick “Mitch” Welcome of Critchlow Street, Tucville. He was at the time riding a CBR bike and was heading back to his work place, through Aubrey Backer Road, South Ruimveldt when the accident occurred. Reports indicate that Welcome was struck by minibus BNN 9334, which was speeding and had overtaken another minibus, before slamming into the mechanic, killing him on spot. The accident attracted a huge crowd. In a release, police said the fatal accident occurred at about 10:00h. Investigations revealed that the driver of minibus BNN 9334 overtook another minibus and collided with the motor cyclist who was proceeding in the opposite direction.
As a result, Welcome sustained injuries and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The driver of the minibus is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
Welcome was reportedly knocked off his bike, approximately 30 feet from the point where the minibus struck him. Relatives told Guyana Times International that Welcome’s brain were scattered on the road, while his neck was broken in several places. The dead man’s sister, Loretta Welcome said: “I heard that he was riding the motorbike and the minibus swerved out from the minibus lane, into his lane and hit him. It appears that he died on spot from the injuries he sustained. His neck was broken and his shoulders too.”
Another relative said when he arrived at the scene, Welcome’s body was the ground. “All I did is cover and avoid people from seeing his body,” the man stated.
Meanwhile, the dead man’s father, David Welcome said he last heard from his son minutes before he died. According to him, his son called to tell him to collect two keys from his customers, and 20 minutes later, the elder Welcome received a call saying that his son was dead. A passenger of the minibus told this publication that the driver is apparently at fault, pointing out that he was indeed speeding when the accident occurred. The passenger said she shouted to the driver for him to stop speeding, and warned him if he continued, he will have to put her out. This was apparently two corners away from where Welcome was killed.
Welcome, a father of five, three boys and two girls was described as a popular individual in South Ruimveldt and neighbouring communities.
