Mash Shop launched

Young Guyanese designers will have a chance to display their creativity, charisma and the variety of their work at the annual “Mashramani Shop”, which was officially launched at the Mash Secretariat on Middle Street on Wednesday.

Speaking at the simple launching ceremony, Culture Minister Dr Frank Anthony indicated that he was happy and pleased to be associated with the activity, which will run until Mashramani Day.

He encouraged the public to visit the shop and be part of the “feelings” leading up to the Mash celebrations.

Minister Anthony highlighted that the Mash Shop was designed with intention that the private sector should view the costumes and make pre-orders in time for the Mashramani celebrations of 2011; and, most importantly, bring their ideas and work collectively with the young designers to come up with the final pieces. Anthony also disclosed that the costumes on display are constructed with very affordable and accessible materials to suit everyone’s means and taste.  Designer Carol Fraser explained that the secretariat will be opened from Monday to Friday, between 10:00 and 16:00hrs, to facilitate persons who are interested in making purchases or placing orders.

She related that many designers will participate in the exhibition, but those presently showcasing their pieces came from as far away as Essequibo and Mahaica.  Fraser also said that, with the excellent designs from the young designers, Guyana will have an identity that will showcase itself as “Jungle Vegetation”.

There are package designs on some costumes as follows: – those for revellers: consisting of a T-shirt, jeans and a head piece; the semi-costume: consisting of a top, bottom, hand and head pieces; and the full costumes: top, bottom, hand, head, arm and leg pieces. These costumes cost from $12,000 to $16,000.

Among the designers on display are Rave Designs (Roger Evelyn), with his piece “Madmajorie”; Carlos Williams, with his concept “Colours”; Paula Evans, Winston Alexander and Jennifer Gibson with their designs “Dis Is We Thing”; Terrance Broomes, with “Water and Butterfly Sunset”; and Nelsion Nurse, with  “Jungle Pride”.
