Mark Vieira named Champion Driver

– Guyana finished second to Jamaica

Guyanese ace driver, Mark Vieira was on Sunday bestowed with the title of Champion Driver when the Caribbean Motor Racing Championships (CMRC) were held at the South Dakota Circuit, Timehri, in front of a massive crowd.
Vieira with his fully loaded RX8, powered his machine to cop two firsts and one second in the highly competitive CMRC Group 4 category, outshining his two Jamaican rivals, David Summerbell Jr. and Peter Rae.
In a brief interview, Vieira noted that he is pleased to have been named champion driver and thanked his team for working extremely hard. He added that his RX8 is quite new to the South Dakota Circuit since it was recently bought and a lot of work had to be done on it.
The champion noted that while, it was a competitive day, he is happy with the outcome despite some turbulence during his third race. The spectacular performance by Veira significantly contributed to Guyana’s gaining second spot overall even though they started the day in cellar position. The Jamaicans maintained their pole position coming into the third and final leg.
Barbados finished in third and Cayman Islands were relegated to fourth. Jamaica finished on 137 points, Guyana on 88, Barbados, 74, and the Cayman Islands, 37.

Nevertheless, as the curtains of the CMRC season were pulled, Jamaican driver, David Summerbell Jr. was named best driver of 2012 followed by his colleague, Peter Rae, and Barbadian, Roger Mayers in the third spot.
Vieira and Andrew King were fourth and sixth respectively in the ratings.
Summerbell, in an interview said that Sunday’s meet was competitive and expressed his congratulations to the Guyanese team who fought very hard to climb the ladder. He said that the competitors exhibited excellent sportsmanship and he was proud to be associated with such people.
The elated Jamaican added that he was overwhelmed to end the season on a high note, underscoring that despite not performing as he had expected in the championship, he attributed his success to the meetings in Jamaica and Bushy Park, Barbados.
Another Guyanese, Stephen Vieira rode his way to being named Champion Superbike rider. Vieira also won two of the three Superbike B Class races; the other was won by Nikhil Seereeram.
Guyanese, Stanley Ming Jr. also dominated in both Go-Kart races.
However, in the Group 2 Championship, Barbadian Mark Thompson revved his engine into the first position followed by Jamaican, Sebastian Rae and another Barbadian, Kenrick Husbands in the third position. Thompson also won the three Group 2 A races which impacted on his overall performance.
