Man gets bail for gun-butting girlfriend

A 27-year-old man was granted bail by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton on Tuesday when he appeared before her for gun butting his girlfriend and threatening to kill her.
Stephan King of Lot 64 Premniranjan Place, Prashad Nagar, Georgetown, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to the charges of assault causing actual bodily harm and threatening behaviour.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the first charge, which stated that on July 29 at Prashad Nagar, he unlawfully assaulted virtual complainant (VC) Sasha Sandy, to cause her actual bodily harm.
He then pleaded not guilty to the other charge, which stated that on the same day and location, he made use of threatening behaviour to the said VC, causing a breach of the peace to occur.
King was represented by Attorney Gordon Gilhuys who told the court that his client and the VC have been in a relationship for the past seven months and on the day in question, there was a misunderstanding between the parties.
The attorney said that his client has a child with another woman and on the day in question, he and his girlfriend went to a show and the mother of the defendant’s child spoke to him while they were there.
Attorney Gilhuys went on to say that when the VC and the defendant returned home, an argument ensued between them during which the VC held on to the defendant and began hitting him.
Attorney Roger Yearwood, who was representing the VC, said the defendant slapped his client several times. He revealed that the defendant gun butted his client and told her to open her mouth after which he placed a gun in her mouth and threatened to kill her.
The magistrate said the medical certificate obtained by the VC is consistent with her attorney’s allegations.
Police Prosecutor Simone Payne had no objection to bail, but asked that it be granted in a substantial amount. She said the defendant’s caution statement does not speak of him being assaulted by the VC.
The prosecutor added that a search was conducted by the police but no firearm was found. She then asked that the defendant have nothing to do with the VC, until the matter is determined.
Magistrate Octive-Hamilton informed the court that both parties will have to undertake to have nothing to do with each other pending the determination of the matter. King was granted Gy$ 25,000 bail for both matters, and will make his next court appearance on September 17.
