Man drowns during outing to Onderneeming

An Airy Hall, Essequibo Coast family’s Easter plans were plunged into chaos when they received news that their son had drowned while he was on an outing with his friends.

Dead is 22-year-old Azaam “Shortman” Mohamed, of Airy Hall village. According to the man’s mother, Basmattie Lachman, Mohamed left home early Sunday morning, April 24th, stating he was going with some friends to the popular “hot and cold” lake in Onderneeming.

Lachman stated that Mohamed had mentioned earlier in the week that he was planning to go to the regatta in Bartica for the holidays, but his plans changed after his friends convinced him to go to the lake. The tearful mother said late Sunday afternoon that one of his friends whom he went with, Babi Spencer, came to her home and informed her that her son was missing. “He come and ask me for his right name. I ask why; he said my son was playing cricket and after that they did not see him back.”

The woman said she immediately went to the police station and lodged a report. Lachman said there were suggestions that her son may have drowned, and persons from the community immediately converged and began to search the lake, but they did not locate the body. However, on Monday morning, April 25th, someone from the village noticed Mohamed’s body floating in the lake. Police from Suddie were quickly summoned and the body was fished out. The mother described her son as hardworking and loving. “He was the best child for me. He was like the bread winner for the family. I loved him very much.” Mohamed leaves to mourn five siblings.
