Sudesh Rambhajue will next Monday answer to allegations that he attempted to murder his father-in-law, Latchman Narine Persaud, on September 18, 2015 at Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo.
Rambhajue had been charged with felonious wounding committed on Narine Persaud, but at Tuesday’s arraignment before Justice Brassington Reynolds at the Demerara High Court, he denied both counts.
The defendant did not have legal representation, but the court nevertheless empanelled the matter, giving the accused almost one week to obtain the services of an attorney to defend him in court.
Rambhajue told the court he could not afford to retain an attorney and requested that the State provide representation for him. However, the court’s view was that such charges do not necessarily require the State to provide legal counsel.
Prosecutor Seeta Bishundial is leading the State’s case, and is assisted by fellow attorneys Narissa Leander and Tiffini Lyken.
It was previously reported that Narine Persaud claimed to have been attacked by the suspect after he had asked him to move out from his house. However, Persaud explained that after Rambhajue had ignored his request, he sought to repeat it when he saw the man approaching his home on the evening in question.
Narine Persaud reported that the man became annoyed, and stabbed him before fleeing the scene.
Several witnesses are expected to testify when the matter is heard next week.
