David Johnson was on Tuesday, March 20, charged for murdering his fiancée and then dumping her body in a drain at Nismes, West Bank Demerara.
The 23-year-old appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court and was slapped with the charge of murder by Magistrate Sherdell Isaacs-Marcus. He was not required to plea to the charge which stated that between March 15 and 17 at Nismes River View, West Bank Demerara, he murdered his girlfriend Leonaka Natasha Johnson, 20, also called “Tasha”. Johnson, who was unrepresented, told the court that he resides at Lot 45 Norton Street, Georgetown.
He said he has no children and was employed as a causal employee at Stabroek News up to the time of his arrest. The soft-spoken young man was however informed by the magistrate that he was charged with an indictable offence which is not bailable, thus he will be remanded.
Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews requested that the accused be brought again before the court in April. Following the prosecutor’s appeal, Johnson who appeared calm, was told that his matter was transferred to the Wales Magistrate’s Court for April 2. He was then escorted out of the courtroom.
Johnson and the deceased were involved in a relationship for more than five years. The deceased close relatives were seen in the courtroom while the charge was read to the accused.
Isobelle Hinds, the deceased’s mother told media operatives that she was pleased with the way law enforcement ranks conducted their investigation which led to Johnson’s arrest.
The woman added that after her daughter went missing, the accused told her that he would accompany relatives to an attorney’s office to seek assistance in finding Tasha. He allegedly admitted to relatives that he was in the company of Tasha before she went missing.
Hinds said that all along relatives have suspected that the young man was involved in the girl’s disappearance and death. “This boy knew that he kill Tasha and was still with us searching for her, I just can’t believe that”.
The couple’s five-year relationship was described by relatives as abusive, owing to the accused who was very jealous and quick to anger.
