A man was before Magistrate Allan Wilson on Monday, March 12, for a robbery in excess of Gy$ 9 million, committed on a businessman in January.
Randy Morris, 32, of Lot 263 Freeman Street, East La Penitence, Georgetown, made an appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to the charge of robbery under arms.
The accused was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which stated that on January 10 at Durban Street, Lodge, Georgetown, being armed with a gun, he robbed Roger Hinds of 345 pennyweights of raw gold, two pistols, cash, jewellery, among other articles amounting to Gy$ 9,668,000.
Also, on January 26, Natanolan Martin, of Lot WW 7 North-East, La Penitence, Georgetown, was charged for this robbery. He was remanded to prison.
Prosecutor Robert Tyndall objected to bail on the grounds of the nature and prevalence of the offence.
He requested that the matter be adjourned until March 16, so the prosecution could seek advice as to whether they should merge the charges against Morris and Martin.
Attorney James Bond appeared on behalf of the victim, Natanolan Hinds.
Morris was represented by Attorney Gordon Gilhuys who made an application for reasonable bail and requested that the matter be tried summarily (that is, the Administration of Justice Act (AJA) be applied) since Martin’s cases is being tried summarily.
Gilhuys stated that his client has been constantly harassed by a particular officer, and police have been arresting Morris for various robberies. The defence attorney added that his client was arrested at his girlfriend’s home in Quamina Street, and the police shot him in his abdomen while his girlfriend was locked in a room.
Attorney Gilhuys further stated that when he went to the CID, he was prevented from seeing his client, who was placed on an identification parade on Sunday.
The prosecutor informed the court that in relation to the accused being shot, that never happened, and he tendered a medical report which stated that the accused received injuries as a result of a scuffle between him and the police.
The magistrate then related to the court that according to the legislation, a medical report can only be tendered if the injuries are inflicted by the parties involved in the offence.
The magistrate in her ruling informed the court that Morris was denied bail and would be remanded to prison until March 16. She then granted the defence’s application for the accused to be examined by a doctor of his choice and at his expense.
