A 46-year-old taxi driver was beaten to death, on Sunday, December 16, allegedly by his lover’s neighbour, who had been verbally abusing the woman over money owed to him.
Dhanpaul Ramharakh, a father of two and of Block X Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara, reportedly died after sustaining multiple head injuries and broken limbs about his body. His alleged attacker turned himself in to police custody late Sunday night.
Reports indicate that, at around 19:30h, Ramharakh’s girlfriend, Shanta Bharat, called him when he was about to take his wife for an outing, saying that she was being abused by her drunk neighbour, “Fazal”. He soon rushed to her home in Anna Catherina.
Guyana Times International understands that the two men began to argue, and minutes later a fight ensued, during which Ramharakh was beaten unconscious. The suspect’s wife reportedly assisted Ramharakh into his car, and he was rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The dead man’s reputed wife, Naryanee Eunice, told this publication that Ramharakh had dropped off passengers in Leonora after making a trip to Canal Number One Polder, West Bank Demerara, and had made a stop at the taxi’s base in Cornelia Ida before calling her to accompany him back to Canal.
“He call and say bathe, that he will carry me for a walk in Canal…and then just like that he “sweet woman” (paramour) call he and say how Fazal cussing she, and he left to go by she,” Eunice said.
She was later told that her husband was beaten to death by the suspect, whom he had known for over 15 years. Eunice said she suspected that her husband’s neck was broken, due to its appearance. She refuted reports that her husband had been under the influence of alcohol when he met his demise.
Eunice said that her husband made several attempts to leave Bharat, but she continued to molest him via calls and messages. “He wanted to leave she, but she does call he 12:00 in de morning (at midnight) and molest he…” Eunice also told this newspaper that Bharat is married and has two daughters.
Meanwhile, when this newspaper visited Bharat, she said Ramharakh was her friend, and he was just passing when she was being verbally abused by her neighbour.
The woman’s husband was at home at the time, but he did not intervene when she was being abused.
However, she contended that Ramharakh had approached her neighbour and had questioned the reason for his behaviour, but his inquiry turned deadly. And the alleged killer’s wife, Sarojonie Kuppal, is saying that her husband was not abusing Bharat, but was asking for money owed to him. The woman said that, minutes later, she saw her husband and Ramharakh, whom she described as his friend, talking, and so she went to bed.
She, however, admitted that her husband “had a few drinks”, and she also said that Ramharakh appeared “tipsy” as well. A post-mortem examination is expected to be performed on Ramharakh’s body on Wednesday.
